An intake counseling session is a warm, confidential first meeting where you and your counselor get to know each other, clarify your goals, and map out a plan for moving forward. During this session, you’ll share your current concerns, personal history, and what you’d like to change or understand better. The counselor will ask questions to understand your strengths, challenges, and any immediate needs, explain how therapy works, review confidentiality and limits, and discuss practical details like session length, frequency, fees, and cancellation policy. By the end of the intake, you should have a clearer sense of the therapeutic approach that will be used, mutual expectations, and next steps—whether that’s beginning regular sessions, a referral, or a short-term plan to address urgent concerns. The goal is to create a safe, collaborative foundation so you feel heard, respected, and supported from the very first appointment.

Our intake process is warm, respectful, and designed to help everyone feel heard from the very first session. We begin with a brief phone or video consultation to answer questions, review logistics, and make sure our approach is a good fit. For the first full session, each person has time to share their perspective, goals, and core concerns while the clinician gathers family history, communication patterns, and any relevant medical or mental health information. We use structured, collaborative tools to identify strengths, recurring conflict cycles, and shared values so treatment goals are clear and practical.
Confidentiality and safety are prioritized. We explain limits of confidentiality, emergency procedures, and how individual versus joint sessions will be used. If needed, we collect consent for sharing information among family members or with outside providers.
After intake, you’ll receive a concise treatment plan outlining goals, recommended session types (couples, family, individual), frequency, and measurable milestones. We welcome questions, adjustments, and ongoing feedback so the plan evolves with your needs. Our aim is to create a calm, organized start that builds trust and sets a constructive path forward for your relationship and family wellbeing.
